The heart is one of the hardest working muscles in the human body. It works 24 hours a day without tiring or stopping. This ensures that all parts of the body constantly get adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients through the blood. If the heart does not work properly, it will have serious health implications. Therefore, maintaining a healthy heart is important, if you want to avoid diseases like heart failure or heart attack. There are some supplements that are considered good for the heart. By taking these supplements regularly, you can improve and maintain the health of your heart.

Coenzyme Q10 is a compound that is important for the cells. It helps the body to get energy, facilitates contraction of muscles and supports production of protein. It is believed that Coenzyme Q10 can be beneficial for the heart and prevent heart ailments, as it helps in production of energy, preventing clotting of blood and working as an antioxidant. Research has proven that people who take this compound as a supplement are less likely to suffer from another heart attack or pain in the chest in future, and their chances of dying due to a heart disease reduces compared to people who do not take the supplement, as per the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Carnitine helps in the conversion of fat into energy. Research has shown that carnitine helps to reduce symptoms of heart failure and also improves the ability to do exercise in people who have heart failure.

Creatine is naturally present in the muscles of the body. This compound is also found in fish and meat. MedlinePlus states that creatine can enhance strength and endurance in people suffering from heart failure. However, there is a risk of arrhythmia when this compound is taken as a heart supplement. Also, those with diabetes or kidney problems should not take creatine, as it could exacerbate their health problem.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids are important for development and working of the brain and overall growth of the body. Fish oil contains EPA and DHA, which are two types of Omega 3 essential fatty acids. As per research these can reduce the chances of heart disease. In addition, research also shows that by taking fish oil supplements regularly, a person with heart problems can reduce the possibility of arrhythmia and heart attack. Other sources of Omega 3 essential fatty acids include walnuts, flaxseed oil and flax seed.

Before taking any supplement to improve your heart health, make sure that you first consult your doctor.
